“The creative aspect of my work gives me the most fulfillment – creating moments of sheer surprise or joy for a traveler; the wonderful memory that will stay etched in their minds forever – is our raison d’etre. On a recent trip we planned for a group of eight from the USA, I took them to a terracotta sculptor’s home in South India. Here in the ancient pre-Vedic tradition, the group dedicated a towering 10-foot tall terracotta horse to the forest god, “Ayyanar,” the protector of families, farms and food. The sculpted horse was set into a giant open kiln and fired for 24 hours. It was the first time ever that an overseas traveler had witnessed this traditional and unfortunately dying art form first hand. It gave me great pleasure, because I saw an opportunity for this sculptor and his progeny to see that there was a future for their craftsmanship.”
